A PERSONAL COMMENTARY: AN HISTORIC TV STATION ON AN HISTORIC DAY IN AMERICAN BROADCASTING

Before WTTG-5 was connected with Fox, the station was operated for thirty years as an independent station by group owner Metromedia. Prior to that, WTTG-5 was an important part of the ill-fated DuMont Television Network in the 1940s and 1950s. I have long been interested in the history of Allen B. DuMont's company and TV network. Therefore, I was excited to see an actual WTTG / DuMont test pattern (TP) on WTTG. I am thankful that the staff and management of WTTG cared enough about WTTG's history to display the old TP. I am also thankful for having the opportunity to receive, record, and photograph this DX.

Transition Highlight WTTG-5
June 12, 2009

WTTG-5 is one of the few stations I received that was in the process of converting to Nightlight programming. Although not as interesting as WPVI-6's flashcut to digital on channel 6, WTTG-5's conversion to Nightlighting was another highlight of the DTV Transition for me.

WTTG-5's midday newscast on June 12 devoted a large amount of time to discussing the DTV Transition. After the newscast, WTTG-5 switched to Nightlighting.

(DX signals must be strong, stable, and absent of severe co-channel interference in order to produce high-quality photographs and screen captures. Please accept my apologies for the lackluster pictures.)

A nice signal - and no Transition-related material...

Look closely at this photo. This historic test pattern was shown for a few seconds during the final minutes of the newscast. Note "WTTG" is upper left and the "DUMONT" logo is lower right!

The "5" logo in the center looks better on this photo. DuMont's New York station, WABD, was also on channel 5.

SWITCH TO NIGHTLIGHTING

Amid the unstable E-skip and co-channel interference, I could see that WTTG-5's newscast ended and regular analog programming was suspended shortly thereafter. What happened after that is shown in the next three pictures.

The Spanish version of the NAB DTV tips program was joined at this point (in progress). Thus, Nightlighting was officially underway at this historic station.
